'Click here tOur first three weeks has been busy welcoming new students, We thank families for their patience when coming to the office and having to wait as we address everyone’s needs. We ask all adults to leave students at the office and not proceed into the school. This request represents our security response as all CBE buildings work toward a consistent safety protocol.
Valley View & Science Program numbers.
At this point in time we have 77 fewer science program students than the opening numbers for the science program requires. In a few days a decision will need to be made on how we will address this shortfall as we are only funded by Alberta Education for the students we have in our building. We are staffed for full classrooms (50 students per grade) for the science program. Less numbers may mean combined grades at some grade levels and the need to surplus teachers. We are waiting for the first few days of the return to school for the Traditional Schools before moving forward with any changes. The Science program has openings in every grade. We have exhausted the “wait list”, so we are accepting students interested in the science program who did not apply during the lottery process. The Regular Valley View classrooms are 24 students below projections, and we will need to review this situation carefully during the next few days.
Communication
Communicating with parents is on-going. Please see the various Blog links on our webpage for current information. Throughout the school year communication will take place in a variety of ways -Phone calls from teachers, touching base with teachers after school, making appointments with teachers, parent and teacher conferences, report cards, attending School Council meetings. We strive to meet the needs of all of our families. We hope to resolve any concerns at the school level, first with the classroom teacher, secondly with an administrator's support and then at our Area 3 office if concerns are not felt to be adequately addressed. We are committed to positive resolutions of concerns and look forward to working with all of our families.
Fees
All fees that have been approved by Alberta Education in response to Bill 1 will be made available by September 8, 2017. At that time Lunchroom Fees & busing fees will be shared. A $10:00 activity fee for all students has also been approved and is part of the required fees. We are waiting for the approval from Alberta Education for all other requested fees for field trips / field studies. We anticipate receiving that information after September 15, 2017. The CBE encourages all fee paying to be done on-line as much as possible. Please call the school if there are questions we can answer at this time, 403-777-8250.

Instruction, attendance and punctuality
All schools within the CBE are expected to be in compliance with Alberta Education’s expectations in regard to hours of instructions per year. To this end, Valley View School start and end times and classroom timetables have been set to comply with these expectations. When students are absent or late they miss important learning and teaching opportunities. We would like to take this opportunity to remind families that being on time is important and to also highlight that instruction on Fridays is equally important. It is our expectation at Valley View that students attend school regularly and punctually.
Absences
When your child is absent from school, please note that you do not need to call the school. We will be using our automated phone service to call your home/cell in the morning/afternoon to confirm your child’s absence. If you call the school you will still be called by our automated phone service. It is critical that the school has your current contact information. Ensuring the contact information is current is the parent / guardian’s responsibility.
We are aware that sometimes parents choose to have holidays or visit relatives in other areas of the world for an extended period of time. Although travel is sometimes necessary, class attendance is also important. Many of our learning activities are not “run off work sheets” and are dependent on interactions with peers and the teacher. Equivalent work will not be provided by the teacher for extended leaves. If extended leaves are planned, please call the office to let us know. We thank you in advance for your understanding.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Our first conferences will be on September 14. At this conference parents will be asked to work with their child and the classroom teacher to set first term learning goals.
On Thursday, September 14, school will finish at noon for All grade 1 – 5 students and for VV kindergarten students. SP kindergarten students will attend school at their usual times.
-September 14 barbeque & parent meeting,
Dismiss students at 12:00PM Grades I – 5 VV & SP& VV Kindergarten
3:30-4:30 Open Parent Conference, no appointment required
4:30-5:30 BBQ
5:30-7:00 Open Parent Conference, no appointment required
Between 4:30 pm & 5:30 pm students and their immediate families will be invited to a barbeque sponsored by the Rotary Club of Calgary. Bruce Williams, Director of Community Services and his team will be serving Valley View families and staff a delicious BBQ supper (non-pork products). Details on how to access the food / supper will be forthcoming at a later date.
The school will need volunteers between 4:30 & 5:30 to help serve and to set up and take down. We can operate in two shifts if volunteers prefer. Please call the school at 403-777-8250 to offer help.
Classrooms will then reopen from 5:30pm – 7:00pm, for parents to visit classrooms and to meet with teachers and other staff.
Students Safety
Please consider all students safety as you drop off and pick up your child / children. At no time should the parking lot be used to drop off and pick up students and signs are clearly posted to this effect. Please take some time to teach your child / children road and personal safety. Patrols will soon be on duty, pedestrians and motorized vehicles should always obey school patrols. Please do your part in keeping everyone safe. Adults are out on supervision 15 minutes before bell time – students should not be at school prior to supervision time.
Blue Days
These days are designated when it is snowing or raining heavily or when the outside temperature reaches -20 degrees (wind assisted or not). A Blue Day sign will be place on all four entrance doors and they will be unlocked. This means that all students are invited to enter the school and to sit quietly in their designated area. Supervision will be occurring inside. Five minutes after the “back to school bell rings”, the external door will be once again secured and entrance to school will be via our front entrance only.
