We are approaching December and can anticipate having a busy month, not to mention the certainty of colder weather settling in.
Please regularly check the VV web page for updates in the teachers' blogs and under news for parents. At the end of this month there will be a number of reports for parents to read. Coming soon we will see a new look to VV's web page as all of the CBEs pages will be configured to look the same. We will update when this occurs. VV school is undergoing an update to the wireless network and that Is good news. We will have better access to on-line activities anywhere in the building. Parent teacher conferences was a huge success and teachers were very happy to connect with parents. Student report cards will be sent home on January 29, 2018. Parents please note that when students miss school there is a gap between what is taught in the classroom and the student's understanding when they return. The Alberta Program of studies have expectations and teachers teach with this in mind. When there is a gap that gap may not always be made up. Prolonged absence may impact learning. From December 4th to 8th, students will be bringing non-perishable food to school to help address hunger on a local level. Supporting the Calgary Food Bank is the perfect way to participate in the spirit of the season. When making your donation please think about the non-perishable food in your own home. What do you usually buy and use? Those items often make the best donations. It’s helpful for donors to double check the expiry dates on items they bring in. See below for a list of non-perishable food needed: Cereal Peanut butter Pancake mix Syrup Canned meat (ham, turkey) Canned fish Canned fruit Canned vegetables (corn, peas, carrots, mixed vegetables) Stuffing mix Cranberry sauce (whole berry) Soup (tomato, cream of mushroom, chicken noodle, chunky-style soups & stews, dry packaged soups, canned chili) Pasta sauce (tomato based) Juice Brown Beans Dry Pasta Baby Food How to Book a School Conference:

We hope to begin the assembly promptly at 10:30am This a solemn assembly, so may not be suitable for very young children who naturally require movement and the need to speak, yell or laugh. Students who are in Brownies, Beavers etc. are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Our clocks have gone back one hour, Please help your child / children to adjust to this time change. Students are invited into school when the combined temperature falls below -20c (Blue Days). If we have heavy precipitation, no matter what the temperature reads, supervision is provided inside school. During other weather conditions, students will be supervised outside.
Breakfast club begins at 7:40am and ends promptly at 7:55am. Students are then sent to their entrance door in order to prepare for entering into classrooms. We are very pleased to see parents involved in school activities. Field experience whether on a bus trip or on a walking exploration near school, would not be possible without additional adult support. It was so exciting for the school to be supported by families when we asked for pumpkin donations. Pumpkins are still being used to explore many areas of the curriculum. At one point I saw one family bring in ten pumpkins to be distributed to classroom as needed. Please check for these unwanted items and send to school, attention Hazel Wallace: We are preparing fun activities for when it's too cold to go outside during the lunch recess break: -embroidery thread (to make friend ship bracelets) -beads (to make friendship bracelets) -safety pins -colouring books (a variety) -unwanted cribbage (cribb) boards -wool or yarn for weaving -thick cardboard cut into child size pieces to make weaving looms -Lego or other building materials -playing cards -any unwanted games in good condition Teachers communicate student progress in many ways. At formal face to face teacher interviews (November and March), with a written report on academic competencies two times a year. For Valley View School, our two formal written reporting periods are January and June. In-between our more formal situations, teachers make phone calls, communicate by email and through our on-line teacher Blogs. Parents / Guardians are invited to check with the classroom teacher if on-going academic or other areas of student growth, appears to be unknown as we progress between informal, formal and face to face meeting periods. Our November parent teacher interviews will be on November 16 in the afternoon from 4:00 - 7:30 and again on November 17 from 8:00 - 11:30. Details on how to book a time with your child's teacher will be in teacher’s blogs by the end of the day on Tuesday. Valley View Staff are committed to addressing the individual needs of students. We are focused on improving math achievement and this plan will be outlined in our School Development Plan (SDP) to be published later on in November. Additional school initiatives and news are discussed during our once a month School Council meetings and funding to support teaching and learning is discussed in our School Society meeting immediately after the school council meeting. Please come out to join our discussions the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm. The next School Council meeting is November 14, 2017 in the staffroom.
